Shotgun is the front passenger seat from American stage coach wild west idiom. The person who sat next to the driver carried a shotgun to shoot anyone attacking the coach.

American kids think it's the best seat if there aren't two adults in the car.

Now with car safety, kids all have to sit in the rear until they are adult size.

Got it! In France we call that "la place du mort" - deadman's seat - because it's the most dangerous in the car.

For years I barely went away only to Burgundy. All along you can see fat, huge cows (charolaises). Lorraine's black & white cows looked very tiny to me LOL
